"The worst droughts in the Horn of Africa in 60 years causes severe food shortages and over 11 million people affected"
According to reports from the UN, the current drought in the Horn of Africa is the ‘the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.’ More than 11 million people have been affected, many of them in Somalia. This year has seen the lowest river levels in Somalia and there hasn’t been enough rain to refill the dwindling water supplies. With famine officially declared in parts of Southern Somalia, 3.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance including 1.85 million children. The drought is not expected to ease until early 2012 and the numbers of vulnerable people affected are anticipated to rise dramatically. This has triggered one of the sharpest refugee outflows in a decade to Kenya and Ethiopia.
"According the the mayor of Mogadishu, there are over 300,000 refugees scattered in the city, and 6 children die every day in the camps."
