Human Appeal Australia welcomed the Hon. Tony Burke MP, Federal Minister, to its Sydney Head Office today for a meeting focused on strengthening ties and discussing Australia’s role in humanitarian efforts around the world.

Minister Burke was joined by the Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, Cr Bilal El-Hayek, reflecting the importance of collaboration between government, local communities and the humanitarian sector.

Over breakfast, Minister Burke, Mayor El-Hayek and Human Appeal Australia Director Mr Bashar Al-Jamal engaged in an open discussion about the challenges facing communities affected by conflict, displacement and humanitarian crises, as well as the important contribution Australian humanitarian organisations can make in delivering meaningful and sustainable support.

The discussion also highlighted the important role organisations such as Human Appeal Australia play here at home – bringing communities together, celebrating Australia’s multicultural identity and contributing to the social cohesion that strengthens our diverse society.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on how Australia’s humanitarian values extend beyond its borders, while recognising that compassion, inclusion and community connection are equally important within.

The visit marks another important step in strengthening engagement between government, community leadership and Australia’s humanitarian sector, and reflects a shared commitment to ensuring Australia continues to lead by example – through its global humanitarian action and as a nation that draws strength from its cultural and community diversity.
