At least 23 killed as 6.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Albania
Described as the strongest earthquake to hit Albania in 40 years. the latest calamity has left at least 23 people dead, many more missing, and hundreds injured after the earthquake struck yesterday. The quake brought down buildings and left people trapped under rubble.
650 people sought medical attention throughout the day and more are expected to arrive as the rescue services are evacuating the victims and working throughout the night in the affected areas.
(BBC) Besar Likmeta, a journalist based in Durres, told the BBC: “I can see right now the firefighters using their bare hands and trying to cut through concrete and iron slabs of the collapsed building.
“There are Red Cross crews and police special intervention units and army. But there is no clear count of how many people might still be missing.”
Albania was ill-equipped to deal with the situation, he said and had appealed for outside help.
